Dangers of Hadith Hadeeth

2008-10-29 13:16:23
Key points from the Qur'an to consider:

2:79 Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say:"This is from Allah," to traffic with it for miserable price!- Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby.

2:159 Those who conceal the clear (Signs) We have sent down, and the Guidance, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book,-on them shall be Allah.s curse, and the curse of those entitled to curse,-

3:78 There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it!

4:49 O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is best, and most suitable for final determination.

5:44 ..........If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.

5:45 ............And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (No better than) wrong-doers.

5:47............If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.

6:89 One day We shall raise from all Peoples a witness against them, from amongst themselves: and We shall bring thee as a witness against these (thy people): and We have sent down to thee the Book explaining all things, a Guide, a Mercy, and Glad Tidings to Muslims.

17:36. And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).

27:92 And to rehearse the Qur'an: and if any accept guidance, they do it for the good of their own souls, and if any stray, say: "I am only a Warner".

The traditions of the Prophet are said to be contained in Hadith, but one disturbing issue about them can't be denied, the fact that there are so many, and that even Al-Bukhari admits they cannot be all authenticated.

In fact, Hadith did not seem to exist until many generations after the death of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him).

"From a scholarly point of view, the most credible source providing information on events in Muhammad's life is the Qur'an."

"Next in importance are the traditional Muslim biographies of Muhammad and quotes attributed to him (the sira and hadith literature), which provide further information on Muhammad's life.[20] The earliest surviving written sira (biographies of Muhammad and quotes attributed to him) is Ibn Ishaq's Sirah Rasul Allah (Life of God's Messenger). Although the original work is lost, portions of it survive in the recensions of Ibn Hisham (Sirah al-Nabawiyyah, Life of the prophet) and Al-Tabari.[25] According to Ibn Hisham, Ibn Ishaq wrote his biography some 120 to 130 years after Muhammad's death. Many, but not all, scholars accept the accuracy of these biographies, though their accuracy is unascertainable.[21] The hadith collections, accounts of the verbal and physical traditions of Muhammad, date from several generations after the death of Muhammad. Western academics view the hadith collections with caution as accurate historical sources.[26]"

Does it not sound disturbing that some Muslims take Hadith before the Qur'an and that some do not attempt to understand the meaning of the Qur'an, yet they have followed Hadith only?

No Muslim can deny that the Qur'an was the most important legacy the Prophet left, and the Prophet certainly did not reveal a Hadith, only the Qur'an.

I have seen it with my own eyes as a New Muslim, the advice of so many Muslims has been "don't read the Qur'an, you might make a mistake, read the Hadith first instead".  The way of guidance is only shown through the Qur'an, so why do some take questionable Hadith (which cannot be authenticated), as their religion instead of the Qur'an?
