The Importance of Honesty, Justice & Integrity in Islam

2015-10-22 13:44:19

No prophet could (ever) be false to his trust. If any person is so false, He shall, on the Day of Judgment, restore what he misappropriated; then shall every soul receive its due,- whatever it earned,- and none shall be dealt with unjustly. - 3:161 (Y. Ali)

We see it again in the next ayyat that being a good Muslim goes hand in hand with justice but there are also some who believe the ayyat refers directly to the judges and governance of the government in the Muslim community, both politically and religiously.

Allah doth command you to render back your Trusts to those to whom they are due; And when ye judge between man and man, that ye judge with justice: Verily how excellent is the teaching which He giveth you! For Allah is He Who heareth and seeth all things. - 4:58 (Y. Ali)

In the next ayyat this becomes more clear because we are told that we are to first obey Allah, the Messenger (PBUH), and then the leaders of our government.  We are then told that if a dispute arises that we should first refer to Allah and his messenger.

In practical terms today the word of Allah is the Qur'an, and the word of his messenger is also of the Qur'an, but arguably this could extend to authentic Hadith.

O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is best, and most suitable for final determination. - 4:59 (Y. Ali)

We have sent down to thee the Book in truth, that thou mightest judge between men, as guided by Allah. so be not (used) as an advocate by those who betray their trust; - 4:105 (Y. Ali)

But if any one earns a fault or a sin and throws it on to one that is innocent, He carries (on himself) (Both) a falsehood and a flagrant sin. - 4:112 (Y. Ali)
